ISO 9001 deals with Quality Management Systems (QMS). It emphasizes effective processes and trained staff to consistently deliver high-quality products or services.

In principle, all the standards group the controls into the following areas:
 

  • Organisation and Context

  • Leadership

  • Planning (focusses on risk, the management system and how they address the objectives)

  • Support (broadly resources, competence, awareness, communication and documentation)

  • Operation (usually the focus of the controls since it analyses the day to day operation)

  • Performance Evaluation (how an organisation manages and reviews performance)

  • Improvement (all ISO standards expect organisations to aim for continual improvement, however, this is particularly so with ISO 9001)
